Burnham Crit Mar 28 Majcen - Cat 4
Bob Majcen was the sole representative at the Iditarod!. . I mean the crit.  Despite 2 mechanicals, Bob bridged back up to finish strong in miserable conditions! Awesome work!

A VERY windy day, but a great first showing for Team EMC2!  This was a race where experience and practice were as critical as strong legs.  Of course, none of us practiced together much in advance.  That gives us room for improvement!

Radcliff - Masters 40+       14th of 54
A windy but fast day.  Radcliff burned alot of matches chasing what he thought were important moves, including moves by F. Orlandi, J Saplis, R Kron, and R Otero.  Even still Radcliff had the legs to finish well - just got boxed in during a mental lapse on the final lap.

Majcen - Cat 4
Majcen surviced a crash filled Cat 4 race, including Lance-like evasive action into the grass to avoid a crash.  The wind and splits made it a tough race, not to mention the rattled nerves due to poor decisions by others.  Bob Majcen finished shiny side up and did very well considering the suprises!

Woodale Memorial Day Masters Crit

May 23

Radcliff - Masters 40+       20th
This was a fast but controlled ride.  I (Radcliff) tried to not miss a move and marked several strong riders: Widoff, Swartzendruber, Orlandi, Kron.  Unfortunately, none of these made the day's break.  7 men slipped away and Verizon/Swartzendruber just pulled us around, blocking moves that were not coordinated.  I made some poor attempts at breaking it up, and finished 20th.  One crash, same place as last year, but being up front kept me out of trouble.

Sherman Park Crit

June 13

Radcliff - Master35+ 1,2,3      4th
Knoepke - Cat 4     6th
Scott Knoepke is now a 4 and rode in rainy weather with an aggressive field.  He positioned himself well near the front and out of trouble for most of the race.  When it came to the final sprint, he started his jump just a little too late and placed 6th.  This is a terrific result considering the conditions and how many XXX riders were in the mix.  A puncture due to glass on the course ended his chances in the Masters 4,5.

Radcliff entered a small Masters 1,2,3 field, with close to half being from XXX the race's sponsor.  There were no less than 15 flats in our race, and I hear that was typical for the day.  I got in a decent 3-man move which held a nice gap until 1 of the 3 flatted.  I missed the break shortly after as I reacted too late and got no support. . . code for "I did not have the legs to bridge that last move."  I barely beat Project 5 for our sprint to take 6th overall, 4th in my category.  The punctures were everywhere.  Unfortunate.

July 12

Radcliff-Meadors     5th in 40+
Fox-Bondiman     3rd in 55+
Tony Meadors and Tim Radcliff clocked a 1 hour 14 second time over the 50k course.  (25.2 average mph).  Bob Bondiman and Mike Fox were laying down a terrific time when Mike had a mechanical problem with his pedal coming in to lap 2.  Bob had to finish solo, but they were moving very well.

Radcliff - Meadors placed 5th in the 40+ category with 30 seconds separating places 5 through 8.  Bondiman - Fox came in 3rd in the 55+ category.  I would love to see how they would have done if Mike's pedal did not break!

Chicago Criterium

July 26

Landenberger - 23rd in Masters 35+ 4/5
Jim returned to racing with a very intelligent and strong ride.  Considering he had not hit a crit in several years, he laid out a plan to stay tucked in and not worry about breaks.  This worked well, and he had strong legs for a solid finish.  Entering the final lap he was near the back end of the pack and by turn 4 he was advancing the top quartile.  He finished 23rd, advancing all the way to the line.  Nice comeback!

Radcliff -  28th in Masters 35+ 1/2/3
I had myself to overcome as I entered a fast but reasonably safe 1/2/3 group.  After witnessing the Cat 3 crash, and several earlier in the day, safety outweighed diving for a finish.  In reality, I don't have the explosive move of a sprinter anyway.  So my strategy was to stay safe and near the front, and give it all I had to move up with a few to go.  I did this reasonably well, but let off the gas too early in the final lap.  Going down the backstretch, I had the crazy idea that I was advancing too far too fast.  What was I thinking?!  To quote Jim landenberger's reminder, "If you aren't going forward, you're going backward in the group."  I didn't lose ground, but my stalling shot my chances for a top 20, and I he 28.

Downer’s Grove Crit

Aug 16

Dave Reed - Cat 2
Dave rode a very strong Cat 2 race.  He shot out of the field early on the kick up around turn 3 to go for a prime.  He bridged, and then shattered the 2 guys who were off the front, and held on for an easy prime win.  After recovering for a bit, he began to move up with 4 laps to go.  Then, some bad luck.  He had a mechanical issue and was no longer in free lap zone.  Dave surely would have been a contender for the race win, but this was not to be his day.

IL State TT Championships

Sep 5

Dave Reed - Masters 30 - 39
Tony Meadors - Masters 50 - 59
Jostein Avestad - Cat 4
Tim Radcliff - Cat 3
Congratulations to Dave Reed who won the Masters 30 -39 category!  Dave clocked a 45.48 averaging close to 27mph.  Dave is Illinois State Champion!

Also Tony Meadors, Tim Radcliff, and Jostein Avestad rode well with times of 49.24, 48.53, and 48.08 respectively.  Jostein averaged close to 25.5 mph and Tim and Tony hovered right around 25mph.

An individual TT is a grueling event where physical strength AND mental strength are key.  Congrads to all!

4 Person TTT, Utica IL

Sep 13

Reed, Meadors, Radcliff, Henley - 3rd Elite Open
Landenberger, Fox, Majcen, Rosada - 10th 40+
Bondiman, Fite, Grigoletto, Starr - 12th 40+
Three  foursomes went to Utica in a very competitive 4 person TTT.  We regret Andrew Stevens was a last minute scratch due to sickness, but Mike Fox was able to cover for him the night before.  I would say all foursomes did extremely well, especially considering this was some riders' first TT.

The event "started" with a 1 hour fog delay.  But after that, the day was absolutely perfect with low winds and abundant sunshine.  We all crossed the line safely and with good times.  There was a very dangerous left turn onto a gravel-laden road, and I am pleased to say all EMC2 navigated that.  I did a little time in the grass on that turn, but avoided the corn and ditch.  I saw some wicked cuts and scrapes from riders not so fortunate.

All in all, a very fun and succesful outing!

ITT, Garden Prairie, IL

Sep 19

Bondiman - 10th Masters 55+
Starr - 10th Masters 50+
Meadors - 5th Masters 50+
Radcliff - 5th Masters 40+
Reed - 4th Masters 30+
Avestad - 1st Cat 5 !!!

These riders put in a great effort in GP.  Dave Reed was fastest, even as he mentally winds down for the year.  Tim Radcliff & Tony Meadors both individually beat the times they posted as a team on the same course this Spring!  Jostein was second fastest of the team- imagine if he would not have missed a turn due to a flagger attending a crash.  Even so, he took FIRST in Cat 5.  He will be bumped up. . .

Bob also missed a turn, but was solid, and Jay Starr continues his comeback with an outstanding individual effort.

Alvestad did his 2nd crit and rode very well finishing 2nd in Cat5 race.  He also finished top 20 in the Cat 4 race later in the day.

Landenberger rode a smooth TT and a smart crit, as he recovers from being sick.  He finished the crit strongly in 19th place.

Stevens showed up just in time for his TT and finished well.  He finished even better on the Sunday crit finishing 7th, putting him 8th overall.

Radcliff fought through a nasty cold on both days.  His TT performance dropped him to 8th overall, which he defended Sunday, finishing 10th, 8th  overall.
